Car Accidents on the Rise Due to Distracted Driving

|

According to the National Safety Council, fatal vehicle crashes are at an all-time high, with the year 2016 having the highest number of car crashes the nation has seen in the past decade. In 2016, the number of fatalities increased by approximately 6% from the previous year, despite miles traveled increasing by only 3%.

Data from the National Safety Council:

  • In 2016, an estimated 40,200 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes
  • In 2015, an estimated 37,700 people died in motor vehicle accidents
  • In 2014, an estimated 35,398 people died as a result of a motor vehicle crash

Despite cars being equipped with better safety features and crash protection technology, traffic deaths have continued to increase – and researchers say that this is largely due to preventable crashes caused by distracted driving.

Drivers Are Becoming More Distracted Than Ever

In a survey by the National Safety Council, the results show that many drivers have admitted to dangerous habits behind the wheel, including using social media, texting, and other electronic device usage. Driver distraction is becoming a major issue on our roads and is causing thousands of unnecessary deaths. Even though cars are being made safer than they have been in the past, human error still accounts for the majority of motor vehicle crashes.

It is also clear that texting and driving bans are not enough. Experts are calling for bans on extended cell phone usage (including hands-free), tougher seat belt laws, better education for drivers, and stricter penalties for those who violate the law.

Car Accident Safety Tips

Here are some ways you can make the roads safer:

  • Put away all distractions
  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Avoid making calls while driving (even hands-free calls)
  • Reduce speeds
