Teen Driver Accidents Are More Common Than Ever

|

It comes as no surprise that teens are likely to engage in risky or reckless behavior, especially when behind the wheel. Excitement for their newfound freedom can lead to dangerous consequences such as physical injuries or even death. When teenagers are given this independence for the first time, they are often resistant to having that freedom restricted.

The following are common reasons behind teen accidents, including, but not limited to:

  • Inexperience, including underestimating dangerous situations. An inexperienced driver is also one who will make reckless decisions like speeding, tailgating too closely behind other cars, failing to yield, and changing lanes erratically. This lack of experience also breeds a sense of discomfort for most new drivers, leading them to make errors which can escalate into an accident.
  • Distracted driving, including texting or talking on the phone, is rampant amongst teen drivers. Other distractions include eating or drinking, forgetting to wear a seatbelt, talking with passengers, or tampering with the radio or control system.
  • Driving under the influence is an epidemic with younger drivers who don’t fully comprehend the consequences of operating a vehicle when they are not sober. Whether drivers are under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both, this often leads to tragic results.

Exercising safety will not only save the driver from an entire host of problems like higher insurance costs and other fees, but it will also potentially save countless lives.
