On-the-Spot Deals

|

Many times, victims of auto accidents are approached by the person that hit them and asked that the police not be called. They promise a quick cash payment or to have their insurer fix damage to the vehicle.

Often, however, these types of people will change their story after leaving the scene. They may give an untrue version of the facts at a later date. This makes it very hard, if not impossible, to make the negligent party pay.

If you are in an accident, make sure you comply with all state and local laws, including ones that require you to report an accident to the authorities. A police investigation is usually very helpful to injured victims of accidents. Police will determine what, if any, insurance coverage the negligent party has, and provide this information in a report. And if the person who injured you violated any traffic laws, the officer may issue a citation.

Here are some important tips to follow if you are in an accident:

  • Do not leave the scene of the accident: Always stay at the scene until the police arrive.
  • Check for injuries; if anyone is injured, call for an ambulance right away.
  • Call the Police: Always call the police after a car accident. Police officers will collect information, investigate the crash, sometimes determine who was at fault, and write an official accident report. This will help any liability claims.
  • Get as much information as you can: This means contact information of other drivers, witnesses, and passengers. Be sure to write down the license plate numbers and insurance information of any involved drivers. Take pictures of the accident scene as well.
  • Do not admit responsibility: Exchange information and be honest, but realize that even a simple apology can be used against you.
  • Seek medical attention: Many car accident injuries can show up days or weeks later. If injured, help your recovery by getting treatment as soon as possible. Medical records are also vital to your accident claim.

Remember- if you are in an accident and are in a vulnerable position, and someone offers you an on-the-spot deal that sounds too good to be true - it probably is.
